Plain Dosa Recipe | How to make plain dosa

Plain dosa are soft and light.  Its main ingredients are rice and black gram. Dosa is a typical part of the South Indian diet and popular all over the Indian subcontinent. Traditionally, Dosa is served hot along with sambar and chutney. There are different versions of dosa used to be prepared in the south indian homes. Few of them are plain dosa, masala dosa, mysore masala dosa, rava dosa, onion rava dosa, ragi dosa etc. Today I am sharing the plain dosa recipe.

Ingredients :

  • 1/2 cup split urad dal
  • 1 1/2 cup par boiled rice (if you don’t find the par boiled you can use the normal rice)
  • salt to taste

Method :

  • Wash urad dal and soak in enough water for 4 hours.
  • Wash rice until water runs clear. Soak separately in enough water for 4 hours.
  • Grind dal to a smooth paste while adding little water to it.
  • Now transfer this dal paste to a large pot.
  • Now grind rice while adding very little water.
  • Add this to urad dal batter and mix. Check the consistency, it must not be very thick or very thin else the batter will not be fermented well.
  • Keep this in a warm place until fermented. It may take from 5 to 12 hours depending on the temperature.
  • Once the batter is fermented, stir it gently. Now add enough water to the batter to get the pouring consistency.
  • Now heat the non stick tawa. Sprinkle some water on tawa and when it starts sizzling whip out with the help of kitchen napkin or tissue paper.
  • Pour a ladle full of batter on the tawa center and spread it evenly in a circular shape.
  • Cook on a medium flame until golden brown.
  • Flip it when the edges rise from the pan. Cook from both sides and remove from flame.
  • Repeat for the remaining batter.
  • Serve plain dosa with sambar and chutney.
