Dal Anda Recipe

Dal with a twist. So far, I have added recipes that include a mixture of dals, mixture of dal with other veggies like lauki, palak etc.This recipes mates the versatile dal with anda (egg). Dal which is in itself quite nutritious, gets an added boost of protein via the anda (egg).


Serving : 4      Cooking Time : 25 minutes

 Ingredients :

• 1 cup Kali Malka Masoor (Black Lentil) (Soaked for 1 hour)
• 2 Eggs
• 1 Onion (Finely Sliced)
• 2 Tomatoes (Finely chopped)
• 7-8 Garlic cloves (Finely chopped)
• 1 Bay Leaves
• 1/2 tsp Cumin Seeds
• 1/2 tsp Turmeric powder
• 1/2 tsp Red Chili powder
• 1/2 tsp Coriander powder
• 1/4 tsp Garam Masala (If you are using ready made garam masala add 1/2 tsp of it)
• Salt to taste
• 2 tbsp Ghee
• Fresh Coriander for garnishing

Method :

  • Drain water from dal and pressure cook dal in 2 and half cups of water with salt and 1/4 tsp of turmeric powder.
  • When the pressure is released mash slightly with the back of spoon and mix well.
  • Heat ghee in a pan. Add cumin seeds and bay leave.
  • When cumin seeds starts crackling add garlic and saute till the raw aroma disappears.
  • Add sliced onion and cook till they are translucent.
  • Now add tomatoes, remaining turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder, garam masala and cook for 2 minutes.
  • Add 2-3 tbsp of water and cook until the oil separates from masala.
  • Now add the cooked dal and 1/2 cup of water (you can adjust water according to yourself), mix well and cook on low flame for 1-2 minutes. Adjust salt according to your taste.
  • Now make a hole in the dal with the help of spoon and slightly drop one egg in this hole. Follow the same procedure for the second egg. Cover the pan with a lid and cook for 4-5 minutes on low flame until the egg is completely cooked.
  • Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and serve hot with steamed rice or chapatis.
