Semiya Payasam/ Vermicelli Payasam Recipe

Semiya payasam/vermicelli payasam is South Indian dish, a kerala dessert. Though it is a south Indian dish, it is prepared all around India. It is very easy and quick recipe to make. Lets start with the recipe….

Cooking Time : 20 minutes            Serving : 4-6

Ingredients :

  • 1 cup Vermicelli/ Semiya
  • 1 cup Water
  • 3/4 cup Sugar or to taste
  • A pinch Saffron
  • 4-5 cups Milk
  • 2 tbsp Cashew nuts
  • 2 tbsp Raisins
  • A pinch of Cardamom powder
  • 2 tsp Clarified butter/Ghee

Method :

  • Heat ghee in thick bottom pan. Add cashew nuts, raisins and fry till cashewnut turns light   golden brown. Remove cashewnuts and raisins from ghee with the help of strainer. keep aside.
  • Saute the vermicelli in the same pan till it turns brown.
  • In the meantime when you are frying vermicelli boil water in another vessel.
  • Add one cup of boiling water and 2 cups of warm milk and cook till the semiya becomes soft.
  • After the vermicelli becomes soft, add the remaining milk and sugar while stirring continuously.
  • Cook for 3-5 minutes and add cardamom powder, saffron and mix well.
  • Flavour the desert with fried cashew nuts and almonds.
  • Simmer the vermicelli for about two minutes.
  • Your delicious semiya payasam/vermicelli is ready to be served.
